Not only a means of exercise, bicycles are increasingly becoming a symbol of a slow, environmentally friendly lifestyle.

“It feels very pleasant to exercise and breathe fresh air without fear of dust or being crowded with motorbikes and cars” Mr. Tran Quoc Dat, a resident of Cam Le Ward, said after completing his 5-kilometer morning ride. For him, Thang Long Street is like a small gift that the city offers to cycling enthusiasts and those seeking a healthier, greener way of living.

The project to upgrade the sidewalks and landscape along Thang Long Street began in 2024 and completed in 2025. It covers more than 4.5 kilometers from the Tuyen Son Bridge to the Cam Le Bridge.

Along the sidewalk next to the river, the city has built a 2m-wide dedicated cycling lane, creating a safe and airy space for cyclists.

Many sections along the route have been planted with trees, creating shade suitable for sports cycling, tourism activities, or short trips within the city.

In particular, along the cycling path, the city has arranged decorative lights in the background and separated them by lane markings, signs and speed bumps. This is considered the first fully planned cycling lane in Da Nang, opening up a direction for green transport development for the city.

According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Huy, Director of the Da Nang Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Traffic and Agricultural Works, said that the design unit has learned from models in Japan and Europe. The purpose is to create a space that encourages people to walk and cycle instead of relying entirely on motorized vehicles.

Not only Thang Long route, in recent years, many groups of cycling enthusiasts in Da Nang have been formed and maintained regular activities. They gather early in the morning or late in the afternoon to ride along mountain roads or coastal routes.

From a tourism perspective, developing a system of cycling routes is also an attractive green tourism product.

Ms. Ngo Thi Minh Huong, a tour guide at the Saigontourist Travel Service Co., Ltd., said that visitors, especially those from Europe, South Korea, and Japan, enjoyed exploring cities by bicycle. Therefore, establishing cycling routes along the coast, rivers, or linking downtown areas with scenic sites and craft villages could create a distinctive tourism experience for Da Nang.

Transport experts suggested the city start with pilot cycling routes along both banks of the Han River or on Nguyen Tat Thanh coastal road where the traffic volume is not too large and the landscape is ideal for cycling.

And with its flat terrain, and diverse natural scenery of rivers, mountains, and the sea, Da Nang has great potential for developing a green transport network comparable to those of leading urban centers worldwide.
