Persistent efforts in implementing green tourism

Hoi An continues to affirm its global appeal as it earns recognition in numerous prestigious rankings. In particular, it ranked 6th among the world’s 25 best destinations and 5th among Asia’s top 15 cities in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2025. It was also named by the Forbes Magazine (the U.S.) as one of the “50 Most Beautiful Villages in the World 2025”.

Besides its rich cultural heritage, Hoi An is a locality that approaches sustainable tourism practices quite early, including green tourism.

Notable examples include the “Say No to Plastic Bags” campaign launched in Cu Lao Cham (Tan Hiep Commune) in 2009, the “Plastic-Free Hotels” model that eliminates single-use plastics, and the introduction of a set of green tourism criteria.

In recent years, Da Nang has focused on developing distinctive eco-tourism products in Son Tra, combining nature experiences with environmental education. Included are red-shanked douc langur watching, trekking, kayaking, sports tourism, and marine conservation activities like coral protection.

The goal is to make Son Tra a typical destination for Vietnam's green tourism model, contributing to positioning Da Nang as a city of sea tourism, festivals and green creativity.

In July, 2025, the Quang Nam Tourism Association (now the Da Nang Tourism Association) in collaboration with the Pacific Environment Vietnam (PE VN) launched the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network.

According to Ms. Quach Thi Xuan, Country Director of the Pacific Environment Vietnam, the establishment of the Vietnam Zero Waste Tourism Network marks a strong step forward and a strategic action targeting one of Vietnam’s strengths. This initiative aims to prevent plastic pollution, uphold the image of ‘green destinations,’ and ensure the sustainable development of tourism.”

Building a long-term strategy

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), the 2026 - 2030 period will be a period of strong recovery and transformation of Vietnam tourism, with focus on green development, technology application, product diversification and service quality improvement.

In particular, for Da Nang, VNAT identifies the city as the hub of the Central Coast region, boasting a strategic location, a rich natural and cultural ecosystem, and connections to world heritage sites.

It recommends that Da Nang prioritize environmental protection and green tourism development, as well as considering Son Tra as a key area to deploy a climate-adaptive tourism, coral reef conservation, and forest - marine ecosystem protection model.

At the same time, the city is also encouraged to establish conservation areas, strengthen waste management, and limit overexploitation of natural resources.
