DNO - The Da Nang International Airport is set for a major infrastructure upgrade after Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority proposed a VND1.82 trillion (approximately US$70 million) investment to comprehensively rehabilitate one of its two runways between 2026 and 2028.

The proposal, recently submitted to the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction, aims to restore the airport's aging western runway (35L/17R) and improve the associated taxiway system, ensuring safer and more efficient operations as passenger and cargo demand continues to rise in central Vietnam.

Under the plan, the 3,049-meter-long and 45-meter-wide Runway 35L/17R will undergo a full-scale overhaul.

The project also includes the construction and upgrading of taxiways connecting the airport's two parallel runways, 35L/17R and 35R/17L, while linking them to the parallel Taxiway W in the military zone.

In addition, work will start on building a rapid-exit taxiway serving Runway 35L/17R, a new connector between the two runways, and another taxiway linking Runway 35R/17L with the parallel Taxiway E.

These improvements are expected to reduce aircraft taxiing time, improve runway efficiency and strengthen operational resilience.

The upgrade is designed to accommodate modern wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 747, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

By improving runway strength and operational capacity, the airport will be better positioned to meet growing demand for domestic and international air travel while supporting the economic development of Central Vietnam at large.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the Da Nang International Airport currently operates two parallel runways.

The eastern runway, 35R/17L, measures 3,500 meters and has been in service since 2012, remaining capable of meeting current operational requirements.

In contrast, the western runway, 35L/17R, stretches 3,049 meters and has significantly deteriorated after 27 years of service since its last major rehabilitation. The runway has exceeded its designed service life without receiving a comprehensive upgrade.

Heavy aircraft movements over the years have caused extensive pavement damage.

Inspectors have identified cracked and broken concrete slabs, corner and edge failures, crushed pavement, exposed aggregates, fine surface cracking, alligator cracking, surface spalling, wheel-path rutting and water ponding.

To keep the runway operational, airport authorities have had to carry out frequent maintenance and repairs.

The proposed investment is therefore regarded as an urgent infrastructure project. The comprehensive rehabilitation will improve operational safety, extend the runway's service life and reinforce the Da Nang International Airport's role as one of Vietnam's most important aviation gateways, capable of supporting future growth in tourism, trade and international connectivity.

This project aligns with Da Nang Airport’s development plan, which targets a capacity of around 25 million passengers per year by 2030 and 30 million by 205
