The plan is considered to align with Da Nang’s long-term strategy, including further research into the development of Chu Lai Airport.
According to Mr. Phan Kieu Hung, Director of Da Nang International Airport, under the Ministry of Construction’s decision approving the airport’s development plan for the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Da Nang International Airport will continue to maintain its 4E classification under the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It will also operate as a dual-use facility serving both civil and military purposes.
Notably, by 2030 the airport is expected to handle approximately 20 million passengers and 100,000 tons of cargo annually. Looking ahead to 2050, passenger capacity will remain at around 20 million per year, while cargo throughput is projected to increase significantly to 330,000 tons annually.
By 2050, the airport will be capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and equivalent models.
During the 2021 - 2030 period and through 2050, Da Nang International Airport will retain its two existing runways. The plan includes the addition of one rapid exit taxiway and two connecting taxiways.
Aircraft apron areas will be expanded southward in a bid to optimize parking arrangements and increase the total number of aircraft stands to around 52.

Additionally, the existing VIP terminal, covering 4,450 square meters, will continue operations. The domestic passenger terminal T1 will be expanded southward to reach a capacity of around 14 million passengers annually. Meanwhile, the international terminal T2 will be upgraded to accommodate approximately 6 million passengers per year.
The cargo terminal will be developed in the northern area adjacent to the regulation lake, covering roughly 2.4 hectares. In the 2021 - 2030 phase, it will meet a capacity of 100,000 tons per year, with an expansion target of 330,000 tons annually by 2050.
Regarding flight operation support systems, the plan calls for the addition of a VOR/DME navigation station and a CAT II 35L approach lighting system. Authorities will also study the installation of an Autonomous Runway Incursion Warning System (ARIWS), Multilateration (MLAT) surveillance technology, and other safety equipment as needed.
Ground connectivity to Da Nang International Airport will be ensured via key routes including Nguyen Van Linh, Duy Tan, Nguyen Phi Khanh and Dang Thuy Tram streets. An underground connection to the airport will be implemented in accordance with local planning and the urban railway network.
