DNO - In the context of accelerating digital transformation, Vietnam’s aviation sector has advanced further as Da Nang International Airport began implementing Level 2 electronic identification via the VNeID app for passengers on April 10.

Advancing paperless journeys

According to airport representatives, a priority lane has been introduced at the domestic departure terminal for passengers using Level-2 accounts on the VNeID app, allowing them to replace physical ID cards during boarding procedures.

This digital identity carries the same legal validity as a citizen identification (ID) for administrative transactions, helping simplify processes and enhance passenger convenience.

The airport’s systems and infrastructure are fully ready to support paperless travel, with the biometrically enabled lane forming part of broader efforts to modernise services and improve tourism infrastructure.

The initiative supports a smart airport model, easing congestion as passenger volumes rise. Biometric authentication, including facial recognition, speeds up verification and improves accuracy while aligning with national digital transformation goals.

After piloting biometric boarding with the VNeID app since August 2023, Da Nang International Airport has now launched a dedicated lane for Level-2 users.

Since March 2025, it has also become Vietnam’s first airport to implement a fully automated passenger process from check-in to boarding, supported by systems funded by Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation Joint Stock Company.

Greater convenience for passengers

The adoption of VNeID offers clear benefits, particularly for frequent flyers. Passengers can complete procedures quickly using only their smartphones, without the need for physical documents.

Many airlines, including Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air, have also integrated online check-in features via VNeID. This allows travellers to check in from home and proceed directly to security upon arrival at the airport.

Combined with biometric systems such as facial and fingerprint recognition, the use of VNeID is expected to move Vietnam closer to a fully “paperless airport” model seen in developed countries, saving time and reducing travel-related stress for passengers.

The initiative forms part of a broader roadmap to develop a smart airport in Da Nang. With ongoing expansion projects, the airport is expected to become one of the region’s leading aviation hubs, capable of serving tens of millions of passengers annually.
