To become a leading airport not only domestically but also internationally, Da Nang is focusing on leveraging its potential, geoeconomic advantages, and strategic investment plans aligned with sustainable development trends.

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), a critical and urgent component of this effort is the proposed comprehensive repair of Runway 35L/17R.

The total estimated cost is around VND1.25 trillion (approximately US$50 million), to be funded from the 2026 airfield maintenance budget, with an expected construction period of about eight months.

The primary objective of the project is to ensure long-term, safe and sustainable operations while enhancing the airfield’s capacity to accommodate modern wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787 series.

Technical assessments have revealed significant deterioration of the runway and taxiway surfaces, including cracking, edge breakage of concrete slabs, rutting, peeling and ageing of asphalt layers.

In 2025 alone, Runway 35L/17R had to be closed 15 times for emergency repairs, underscoring the urgency of a comprehensive overhaul.

Repairing the runway is not only essential for maintaining flight safety but also crucial for reducing operational risks associated with single-runway exploitation.

Along with runway infrastructure upgrade, Da Nang is also strengthening its air cargo and logistics capabilities.

The city’s People’s Committee has approved adjustments to the investment policy for the cargo terminal project at the Da Nang International Airport, with ACV as the investor.

The project has a total investment of more than VND631 billion and will be developed on a planned land area of over 24,600 square metres. This includes space for the cargo terminal building, cargo handling yards and parking facilities, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity to handle freight and support the city’s logistics sector.

One of the key highlights of the Master Plan for Da Nang International Airport for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision toward 2050, is the designation of a capacity threshold of 20 million passengers per year and 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually.

Under this orientation, the Da Nang International Airport will focus on tourism and international passenger services, while the Chu Lai Airport is positioned to develop into a major logistics hub, handling large-scale cargo transport, wide-body aircraft maintenance (Class 4F), and high-capacity air routes.

According to airport management, during the 2021-2030 period, the Da Nang International Airport will continue operating the existing VIP terminal while expanding the domestic passenger terminal (T1) southwards to reach a capacity of 14 million passengers per year.

The international terminal (T2) will also be upgraded, when demand requires, to handle up to 6 million passengers annually. These expansions, combined with runway rehabilitation, form the backbone of the airport’s medium- and long-term development strategy.

With clearly defined planning priorities and coordinated investment in critical infrastructure, the Da Nang International Airport is steadily moving towards becoming the leading aviation gateway of central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.

In doing so, it is poised to contribute meaningfully to strengthening Vietnam’s position on the regional and global aviation map.
