The latest figures highlight not only Vietnam’s growing tourism competitiveness but also its emergence as a benchmark for high-value, short-haul travel in the region.
According to the Korea Tourism Organisation, around 2.34 million South Koreans travelled abroad in May 2026. Japan retained the top spot with approximately 951,000 visitors, accounting for 40.6% of outbound travel, while Vietnam ranked second with nearly 278,000 arrivals.
The figure was almost three times higher than the United States and significantly ahead of Taiwan (China), Thailand, the Philippines and Hong Kong (China).
The ranking reflects Vietnam’s enduring appeal among South Korean travellers, who increasingly favour destinations offering convenience, affordability and premium experiences.
For several consecutive years, South Korea has remained one of Vietnam’s largest international source markets, while Vietnam has become a preferred destination for Korean families, couples and young travellers seeking short vacations.
Coastal destinations continue to drive this success. Phu Quoc, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Mui Ne and Phan Thiet consistently attract visitors thanks to their pristine beaches, world-class resorts, diverse cuisine and expanding entertainment offerings.
Alongside its natural beauty, Vietnam’s hospitality, competitive pricing and improving tourism infrastructure have strengthened its reputation as a destination delivering exceptional value.
Interestingly, an increasing number of South Korean actors, singers and television productions have chosen Vietnam for holidays and filming, exposing millions of fans to the country’s landscapes through social media and digital platforms.
Vietnam welcomed more than 4.3 million South Korean visitors in 2025, surpassing competing destinations such as Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.
The country has also become a leader in South Korea’s fast-growing “micro-trip” trend, where travellers prioritise memorable international holidays that require less travel time and lower costs.
Research from travel technology company Yanolja shows South Koreans spend an average of US$971 per overseas trip, while surveys by Outbox indicate that affordability is now the top priority for 41% of travellers.
Vietnam is uniquely positioned to meet these expectations by combining luxury experiences with moderate prices, all within a flight of around five hours.
An expanding network of direct flights linking Seoul and other major Korean cities with Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc has further enhanced accessibility.
With its winning combination of natural attractions, quality services, competitive costs and strong air connectivity, Vietnam is well placed to sustain its status as one of South Korea’s favourite international destinations while continuing to strengthen its position as a leading tourism hub in Asia.
