DNO - The Hoi An International Lantern Festival 2026 will take place at Hoai River Square, An Hoi Sculpture Garden, along the Hoai River, and across major streets in the Hoi An Ancient Town from December 3 - 6. This marks the first time Hoi An has organized a lantern festival on an international scale.
Under the theme “Hoi An - Heritage in a Kaleidoscope of Colors”, the festival promises to transform the heritage town into a vibrant celebration where light, art, and Hoi An’s distinctive cultural values come together.
The event will coincide with the 27th anniversary of Hoi An Ancient Town’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (December 4, 1999 - December 4, 2026).
It aims to honor the traditional lantern-making craft, intangible cultural heritage values, and Hoi An’s creative spirit, as well as foster cultural and artistic exchanges between Hoi An and localities in Vietnam and abroad.
A highlight of the festival will be the installation of around 15 large-scale artistic lantern clusters at the Song Hoai Square, An Hoi Sculpture Garden, and Nguyen Phuc Chu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu streets, as well as on the Hoai River.
In addition to designs inspired by local handicrafts such as ceramics, wood and bamboo, the festival will showcase lanterns reflecting the cultural imprints of Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Laos, as well as several Vietnamese provinces and cities.
The artistic lantern displays are expected to remain in place through the 2027 Lunar Lantern Festival (Tet Nguyen Tieu).
Furthermore, residents and visitors will also have opportunities to learn how to make lanterns, meet artisans and creators, and explore handicrafts and local cuisine at the “Taste of Hoi An” space.
Also, there will be the “Lanterns and Regenerative Art” exhibition, the “Colors of Heritage” program, a talk show on Hoi An’s traditional crafts, and photography and lantern-pattern design competitions.
Another anticipated highlight will be “Minh Dang Da Hanh” which will recreate the atmosphere of Hoi An Ancient Town in the early 20th century.
Accordingly, festival-goers will join activities featuring traditional Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese costumes, handicraft demonstrations, folk art performances, Vietnamese traditional costume parades, and lantern processions through the ancient town.
