DNO - From chemical-free rice fields to organic vegetable gardens and community-based experiences, Da Nang is developing a greener way to explore its countryside that supports local livelihoods, alongside preserving traditional knowledge and biodiversity.

In the rural areas around Hoi An, sustainable farming is becoming more than a way to produce food. It is helping communities protect their environment, strengthen their income, and share local heritage with visitors.

At Ong Dan Field in Dong Ha residential area, Hoi An, farmer Nguyen Manh Than was among the first to adopt organic, low-emission rice cultivation.

His decision was driven by a desire to protect his family’s health and reduce the impact of agricultural chemicals on the land. Farmers manage water levels, remove weeds by hand and use biological methods to control golden apple snails.

The results have been encouraging. Rice yields remain comparable to those of conventional farming, while organically grown rice can sell for up to VND15,000 per kilogram at the field.

After three seasons without chemical inputs, the soil has become softer and more fertile. The model is also gaining community support.

Eighteen local households have joined the Heritage Rice Cooperative of Hoi An, which now works with 68 households to cultivate nearly five hectares of low-emission organic rice in Hoi An.

With stable market outlets, the farmers are also finding new ways to connect agriculture with tourism.

Visitors can learn about traditional farming and hear firsthand how local communities are preserving their agricultural heritage.

A similar approach can be experienced at Thanh Dong Organic Vegetable and Tourism Cooperative in Hoi An.

On a site of more than 10,000 square meters, 11 member households follow four principles: no chemicals, genetically modified seeds, pesticides, or growth stimulants.

The garden has become a living showcase of sustainable agriculture, attracting thousands of visitors each month, particularly international tourists. Guests can explore organic cultivation practices and engage with local growers.

Each visitor experience provides participating households with VND70,000 in income. On average, members earn around VND6 million a month from vegetable production, supplemented by another VND2 - 3 million from tourism services.

In Hoi An, community-based tourism is also helping traditional occupations become meaningful visitor experiences.

At Kim Bong Ecological Agriculture and Community Tourism Cooperative, woodworking, fishing, and organic farming are woven into activities that introduce visitors to local culture and everyday life. Cooperative Director Bui Thi Kim Cuc says the approach focuses on learning and empowering residents.

Through training, farmers and fishers gain the confidence and skills to take the lead in tourism, becoming storytellers who share their heritage while protecting natural resources.

Da Nang’s green economy, however, requires more than environmentally friendly production. Local authorities say models must generate sufficient economic value to sustain themselves and improve community livelihoods and conserving ecosystems.

The city is working to identify which natural resources and habitats need protection, which production activities can shift toward green and circular practices, and how communities can participate and benefit.

For international visitors, these initiatives offer a different way to experience Da Nang: along with its beaches and heritage streets, the city’s countryside invites travelers to discover local food, traditional knowledge and the people working to preserve them for future generations.
