DNO - Da Nang is increasingly positioning itself as an emerging destination for international sports events, with ambitions of hosting the Asian Beach Games in the future.
The United World Wrestling (UWW)’s U17 & U23 Asian Championships 2026 officially opened in the central coastal city of Da Nang on the evening of May 23, drawing nearly 900 athletes from 25 countries and territories across Asia.
The tournament is taking place from May 23 to June 9 at Tien Son Sport Palace and My Khe Beach Park.
Notably, this marks the second consecutive international wrestling event hosted by Da Nang in a short period.
Earlier, Da Nang had successfully hosted the 2026 Beach Wrestling World Series, leaving positive impressions on international participants through its professional organisation, hospitality and dynamic sporting environment.
In fact, it is no coincidence that Da Nang has become an attractive destination for consecutive international wrestling tournaments. The city possesses ideal conditions for successfully hosting both indoor and beach wrestling competitions.
In particular, Da Nang’s long and beautiful coastline offers an exciting setting for athletes during tournaments. Beyond competition, many athletes also wish to combine their participation with tourism experiences and opportunities to explore the city’s natural beauty.
In addition, the city authorities have shown strong support and created favourable conditions for organizations and businesses to coordinate and host large-scale regional and international sporting events in Da Nang.
In addition to the two wrestling tournaments, since the beginning of 2026, the city has successfully hosted many international sporting events such as the Da Nang International Marathon, VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang and VNG IRONMAN Vietnam.
Beyond competition, international athletes and visitors are increasingly combining sports participation with tourism experiences.
From beaches and cuisine to cultural attractions and hospitality services, Da Nang continues to showcase itself as a dynamic, modern and welcoming city.
Da Nang is currently intensifying efforts to bid for the Asian Beach Games. If Vietnam is selected to host the event, Da Nang has expressed its desire to be proposed as the venue for future editions of the Games.
The city believes that the successful organisation of international tournaments currently taking place in Da Nang will serve as an important foundation for Vietnam, and Da Nang in particular, to pursue the longer-term goal of hosting the Asian Beach Games in the 2030-2031 period.
Hosting the Games would also create major opportunities to boost the sports economy, tourism and service industries, while promoting the country’s image and elevating Vietnam’s position on the international stage.
