The event was jointly organized by the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the United World Wrestling, and the Vietnam Wrestling Federation.

Held in Vietnam for the first time, the tournament attracted nearly 100 athletes from 12 countries, alongside the host team from Vietnam.

Athletes competed in both men’s and women’s events. The men’s competition featured four weight categories: 70kg, 80kg, 90kg and over 90kg while the women’s division included 50kg, 60kg, 70kg and over 70kg.

Matches took place on the sands of My Khe Beach which was once named by Forbes among the most attractive beaches on the planet.

This marks the second consecutive year that Da Nang has hosted an international beach wrestling event at the My Khe Beach, following the 2025 Asian U17 Beach Wrestling Championships.

The tournament in Da Nang served as the opening leg of the five global beach wrestling series in 2026 which will continue in Croatia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Greece.

The event provided fresh momentum for the development of beach wrestling in Vietnam and across the region.

Vietnam had 21 athletes participating in the tournament, including those who won gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games such as Do Ngoc Linh, Nguyen Thi My Trang, and Nguyen Thi My Hanh.

In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Mr. Tao Viet Hai, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said beach wrestling is a highly competitive sport that showcases strength, courage, determination and the noble spirit of fair play.

Hosting the 2026 Beach Wrestling World Championships is not only an honour for Da Nang, but also a testament to Vietnam’s growing credibility and capacity to stage major international sporting events, he added.

Through the tournament, the city aims to introduce international visitors to the image of a dynamic, modern, friendly, safe and integrated destination as well as promote the natural beauty, culture and people of Vietnam in general and Da Nang in particular.

The event also provides an important practical foundation for the city to further strengthen its organizational capacity, operational management, infrastructure, human resources and experience in hosting international beach sports competitions in the future.

Mr. Hai believed that the success of this year’s tournament will create momentum for Da Nang and Vietnam as a whole to pursue a longer-term ambition of bidding to host the Asian Beach Games in 2030 or 2031.

Beyond sporting aspirations, the move is also seen as an opportunity to boost the sports economy, tourism and services, promote the Vietnam’s image, and further elevate the country’s position on the international stage.
