Colombian traditional arts bring Huila’s colours to Hoi An

The cultural exchange programme, titled “From Huila, Colombia to Hoi An, Vietnam,” took place at the Ba Mu Temple Gate relic site at 675 Hai Ba Trung Street in Hoi An, Da Nang.

Young artists from Algeciras, a town in Huila, presented a selection of traditional music and folk dances that reflect the region’s cultural identity.

The programme featured Bambuco, Rumba Campesina, Rajaleña and Sanjuanero - art forms closely associated with community life and local festivities in Huila.

Through music, colorful costumes and energetic choreography, the artists introduced audiences in Hoi An to the cultural character of Huila, where traditional performances remain an important part of community celebrations and social life.

For local residents and international visitors, the event offered an opportunity to discover a different cultural landscape through the universal language of music and dance.

The performance highlights how traditional arts can create connections across cultures without relying on a common language.

This much-awaited event was organised by the Embassy of Colombia in Vietnam under the Sports and Cultural Diplomacy initiative of Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Alongside the performances, the Colombian artists met and interacted with children from Da Nang, creating a space for young people from the two countries to connect through artistic activities. Holding the event in Hoi An added another dimension to the cultural exchange.

The UNESCO-recognized heritage town has long been a meeting place for different cultures. The choice of Hoi An as the venue added to the heritage city’s growing international cultural exchanges, while offering residents and visitors a new cultural experience.

Against the backdrop of Hoi An’s historic streets, the rhythms of Huila offered residents and visitors a lively new cultural experience while opening a window onto Colombia’s rich folk traditions.
