DNO - Vietnam has officially been recognized by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) as a producer of "Fine Flavor Cocoa" (FFC), becoming the second country in Asia to earn this designation.

This recognition gives Vietnam a rare competitive advantage. It is not only among the small group of fine-flavor cocoa producers, but also benefits from diverse ecological conditions and the ability to organize cultivation areas under agroforestry intercropping models aligned with low-carbon agricultural development. In other words, Vietnam does not compete on production volume but can follow the path of high value, brand, and identity.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai from the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI), Vietnamese cocoa is highly valued for its rich flavor, well-balanced natural acidity, and distinctive fruity aroma which are well suited to the craft chocolate, single-origin chocolate and premium product segments.

The Central Highlands is the country’s largest cocoa-growing region. Dak Lak is demonstrating the greatest potential for developing a structured and sustainable cocoa industry.

Not only does it have the largest cocoa growing area, but Dak Lak also enjoys unique advantages such as fertile basalt soil, a stable highland climate, long-standing experience in industrial crop cultivation, and a developing business-cooperative ecosystem.

Currently, the agricultural sector in the Central Highlands has proposed solutions for developing the cocoa value chain in the coming years.

Included are strengthening and expanding cooperative-based economic models in the cocoa sector, encouraging the establishment and consolidation of specialized cocoa cooperatives, and reorganizing production around concentrated raw-material zones linked to processing and consumption enterprises.

Fine Flavor Cocoa (FFC) is a term used by the ICCO to refer to cocoa varieties with distinctive flavors and superior quality. This accounts for approximately 10 - 15% of global cocoa output and mainly serves the high-end chocolate and artisanal chocolate segments.
