At 33, working at University of Texas at Austin, the United States, Thien is not only pursuing advanced research but also building a support network designed to help others follow a similar path.

Helping Vietnamese students reach global education

After nearly a decade studying and working across Asia and North America, Thien noticed that these environments offer abundant opportunities for learning, self-improvement, and professional growth.

However, the number of Vietnamese students and colleagues in such spaces remains relatively small compared to their international peers.

The issue, he realized, was not a lack of talent, but limited access to information, mentorship, and structured guidance. Determined to bridge that gap, he founded PhD.Hub in 2024 - a platform dedicated to sharing fully funded scholarship opportunities, academic insights, and research experiences.

In just two years, PhD.Hub has grown into a vibrant network of nearly 130,000 members, including students, graduate researchers, and professors both in Vietnam and abroad.

The platform has curated and shared information on more than 5,000 scholarships, helping many young people take their first steps toward international education.

For many users, it is more than just a database, it is a community that offers clarity, encouragement and a tangible sense that studying abroad is within reach.

Alongside this initiative, Thien launched PhD.Hub Foundation, a volunteer-driven fund aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Through personal funding and community contributions, the foundation provides practical assistance, including visa fee support of up to VND50 million per student, free academic mentoring, test preparation resources, and scholarship programs.

It also runs outreach initiatives delivering books and learning materials to students in remote areas.

From personal journey to global academic vision

What sets Thien’s work apart is not just scale, but philosophy. His model is built on knowledge-sharing and long-term empowerment - creating pathways for others rather than isolated success.

Looking ahead, he aims to become a professor specializing in construction materials in the United States, a position he believes will allow him to further expand opportunities for Vietnamese students globally.

For young people considering studying abroad, Thien’s journey offers a compelling message: opportunity exists but it grows stronger when supported by access, preparation and community.

From 2019 to 2021, Tran Quoc Thien worked as a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the University of Science and Technology under the University of Da Nang (UD), before moving to the United States on a fully funded PhD scholarship in civil engineering at Virginia Tech.

In 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on low-carbon binding materials. He is currently continuing his research in civil engineering at University of Texas at Austin.

To date, Thien has published nearly 30 scientific papers on “green” materials, contributing to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.
