Founded by Tran Nhan Kiet, Director of Binks Joint Stock Company and a graduate of the Vietnam-UK Institute for Research and Executive Education (VNUK), the project began in 2023 as a university research initiative.
Inspired by the large volume of vegetables and fruits discarded daily at markets and supermarkets, the team explored ways to recover anthocyanins – natural pigments found in agricultural by-products – and convert them into safe, plant-based writing inks and artistic paints.
Compared with conventional products, Binks' plant inks demonstrate three times greater colour durability and six times faster drying time, while containing no hazardous colouring metals or harmful chemicals.
The products have been tested by the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam, confirming that the plant extracts are free from cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), arsenic (As) and formaldehyde.
This makes the products particularly suitable for schools, children, artists and environmentally conscious consumers.
Building on the same technology platform, Binks has expanded beyond inks to develop plant-based watercolours and is currently completing testing and certification for an innovative plant-based water paint, with commercial production expected after product validation.
Sustainability remains at the heart of the company's business model. After pigment extraction, the remaining plant residue is supplied to agricultural partners for composting into organic fertilizer, ensuring that nearly every part of the raw material is reused instead of becoming waste.

The innovation has already gained significant international recognition. In 2025, Binks received the Gold Award at the International Creativity and Innovation Award (ICIA Global 2025) organized by Indonesia's KRYA Education Organization.
The same year, it won the Youth Champion Award at the APEC Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Award held in South Korea.
In 2026, Binks participated in the BCG Awardees Connect 2026 programme organized by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where international experts highlighted the project's ability to combine local agricultural resources, biotechnology and artificial intelligence-driven colour data to create commercially viable green products.
Today, Binks products are already being used in Vietnamese educational institutions, including Wonder Kids Da Nang, the Vietnam-Japan School System, and the Da Nang University of Architecture, as well as by businesses, artists and creative organisations.
Internationally, trial orders and product deliveries have reached South Korea, Thailand, France, Hungary, Japan and the United States, while partnership discussions continue with organisations in Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and Australia.
The company now supplies more than 60 partners across education, fine arts, exhibitions, communications and innovation sectors, with over 100,000 bottles of plant-based inks and paints distributed in domestic and overseas markets.
