Hoi An surpasses Bali and Phuket to become the world’s best value long-haul destination this winter

The Post Office has crunched the data and named the top 10 best value far-flung destinations for winter sun, based on the everyday costs of things like a bottle of water, suncream and cocktails.

"Long-haul travel doesn’t have to mean unaffordable. Sure, flights can sting, but you often make it back on the ground with cheaper hotels, food and activities by picking a destination with more affordable costs", The Post Office explained.

Snagging the top spot is Hoi An, which also took the crown in 2023. Here, a 3 - course evening meal for two, including a bottle of house wine, will give you change from £40, while a local lager costs £1.23.

Beyond the bargains, Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most photogenic cities, with cobbled streets curling around a lantern-lit river, world-class street food, idyllic beaches and a buzzing night market.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Hoi An is famous for its lantern-lit streets, riverside cafés, bustling night markets, and nearby beaches.

The town’s unique mix of cultural influences together with its world-class street food - from “cao lau” noodles to “banh mi” - has made it one of Asia’s most photogenic and beloved travel spots.

The Post Office report also highlighted other affordable winter escapes, including Cape Town (South Africa), Bali (Indonesia) and Mombasa (Kenya). But Hoi An’s combination of low prices and cultural richness set it apart as a top choice for 2025.

As international tourism continues to recover, Hoi An is expected to attract more visitors seeking budget-friendly winter holidays without compromising on beauty or experience.
