DNO - Bordering Quang Ngai Province, the communes of Nui Thanh, Tam Hai, Tam My, and Duc Phu in Da Nang boast diverse and abundant terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
In particular, Nui Thanh and Tam Hai communes are home to rich aquatic ecosystems, including mangrove forests along the coast, riverbanks, and tidal flats in An Hoa Bay. These mangrove forests cover around 110 hectares and have more than 13 species.
Seagrass beds thrive in the low-tide areas beneath the average water level. Along the Truong Giang River and An Hoa Bay, seagrass is concentrated on the shores of Nui Thanh Commune and Con Si in Tam Hai Commune.
These seagrass beds here cover most of the shallow waters and the dunes from low tide to a depth of 1-2m, with a total area of about 78.5 hectares.
At Ban Than Cape in Tam Hai Island Commune, fringe coral reefs are distributed along the shores of Hon Dua and Hon Kho islets, while base coral reefs are found on the shoals at the entrance of An Hoa Bay and at Bai Ran Lon.
In Tam My and Duc Phu communes, the terrestrial ecosystem is also rich with typical species in the highlands, including the grey-shanked douc langurs with about 69 individuals concentrated in Tam My Commune. This endemic species, listed as critically endangered in Vietnam’s Red Book, is at risk of extinction.
However, these abovementioned ecosystems face some challenges. Specifically, mangrove trees such as mangrove, rhododendron, and white barringtonia planted in Nui Thanh and Tam Anh communes are drying out.
In addition, due to the impact of climate change, extreme weather, and pressure from population growth, the biodiversity ecosystem in the localities is rapidly declining. Habitats are degrading in both quality and size. Many rare species are under threat of decline.
According to Resolution No. 13/2024 of the former Nui Thanh District Party Committee by 2030 with a vision to 2050, Nui Thanh, Tam My, Tam Anh, and Duc Phu communes will accelerate the establishment of nature reserves, conduct biodiversity assessments, and implement measures to restore ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
Other solutions will include curbing illegal exploitation, designating protected zones for natural regeneration, and proposing a dedicated reserve for the grey-shanked douc langur in Tam My Commune.
