The Da Nang People’s Committee recently confirmed the groundbreaking ceremony will be held in accordance with a decision on approving the selection of the project’s investor consortium.

The project will be developed by a consortium led by Hateco Group, its port subsidiary, and APM Terminals of the Netherlands.

With a total estimated investment of VND45.268 trillion (approximately US$1.8 billion), the port will span around 172.6 hectares, positioning it as one of the largest and most strategic infrastructure developments in central Vietnam.

Designed as a fully integrated port ecosystem, the Lien Chieu facility will include eight container berths with a combined length of 2,750 metres, capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs.

A dedicated 1.5-kilometre railway connection linking the port directly to the Kim Lien station, along with a 5,000-tonne barge terminal, will enable seamless multimodal transport and help ease pressure on road networks.

The project is structured into three phases over a total implementation period of 3,639 days, or nearly a decade.

Phase 1, scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2028, will focus on delivering at least two initial berths, along with key supporting infrastructure such as dredged navigation channels, logistics yards, and rail connectivity.

Phase 2, running through the first quarter of 2033, will add berths three and four.

The final phase, expected to conclude by the first quarter of 2036, will complete the remaining berths, the barge terminal, and the full technical infrastructure system.

Once operational, the port is expected to handle approximately 4 million TEUs annually within three years of Phase 1 completion.

At full capacity, the Lien Chieu Port will reach a designed throughput of 5.7 million TEUs per year, equivalent to around 74 million tonnes of cargo.

The project also aims to meet “green port” standards, incorporating advanced automation technologies in cargo handling and adhering to strict international benchmarks on environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Strategically located, the Lien Chieu Port is set to become a primary gateway to the East Sea for the East-West Economic Corridor, enhancing regional connectivity and reinforcing Da Nang’s role as a key logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

Earlier in March 2026, the city completed shared infrastructure components of the port and opened a coastal road providing direct access to the site, laying critical groundwork for the project’s timely implementation.
