DNO - Da Nang has set sights on becoming one of Vietnam’s top three semiconductor design and artificial intelligence (AI) centres by 2030.
On August 30, the Da Nang Semiconductor Day 2025 featured a high-level conference themed ‘Foundational Technologies for the Future Society: The Intersection of Electronics and Photonics’ where experts and industry leaders discussed next-generation technologies driving global connectivity.
Speaking at the conference, Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Luong Nguyen Minh Triet noted that semiconductor technology has been identified as one of Vietnam’s 11 strategic technology sectors, with a focus on strategic products including specialized chips, AI chips, and IoT chips.
According to a development plan issued in January 2025, Da Nang has set concrete targets: cultivating at least 5,000 highly skilled professionals, building a network of 30 semiconductor design firms,2 packaging enterprises, and a minimum of 5 startups in this field.
The city also seeks to create a robust innovation ecosystem that links research, education, and industry.
In particular, the conference highlighted groundbreaking research in photonics, the evolution of transistors, and the integration of AI into optoelectronics.
Silicon photonics was spotlighted as a strategic solution for high-speed connectivity in AI systems and data centres, an area where Vietnam is expected to strengthen its role in global digital infrastructure.
Da Nang’s semiconductor ecosystem has already expanded from 8 design companies to 25 firms active in design, packaging, and testing.
The city has also partnered with eight universities and colleges, which enrolled 600 semiconductor students in 2024, with admissions projected to reach 1,000 in 2025.
Six training courses have additionally been held for more than 250 lecturers and students, reflecting sustained investment in talent development.
A major milestone this year is the launch of VSAP-LAB’s advanced packaging Fab-Lab, a pioneering $72 million project with a planned capacity of 10 million products annually.
Founded by Vietnamese experts with decades of global industry experience, the initiative underscores efforts to build indigenous capabilities and master core technologies.
