Da Nang taps cinema to build destination brand

DNO - A film may end after a few hours on screen, but the emotions it leaves behind often last much longer. A seaside scene, or a street corner rich in local character, can sometimes be enough to inspire audiences to visit, experience, and explore a destination for themselves.

Da Nang on screen

Last year, scenes filmed around the lake at the Furama Resort Danang, as well as on the My Khe Beach and the Son Tra Peninsula, and at Sun World Ba Na Hills, in the film “Love in Vietnam” (Van Dam Yeu Em) delighted many Da Nang audiences during the third edition of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF).

The movie featured the romantic love story between Manav, the heir to an Indian billionaire family, and Linh, a beautiful Vietnamese artist.

Da Nang has also appeared as a filming location in productions such as the American action thriller The Protégé, Em and Trinh, and Let's Go Home (Nha Minh Di Thoi).

While a destination video may show viewers how beautiful a place is, a film makes them want to visit and experience the story, atmosphere, and emotions they once witnessed on screen.

President of the Vietnam Film Promotion Association and President of DANAFF

Over its three editions, DANAFF has attracted hundreds of artists, directors, producers, and cinematic works from numerous countries across the region.

The festival has not only provided audiences with access to quality films but has also helped spread the image of Da Nang through a wide range of cinematic activities.

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Film Promotion Association and President of DANAFF, believes that DANAFF has the potential to become a new cultural brand if it is invested in and developed in the right direction.

Besides its natural landscapes of stunning beaches, mountains, rivers, peninsulas, and iconic bridges, Da Nang also boasts a rich treasure trove of culture, history, and modern urban life.

These elements offer fertile ground for creating distinctive cinematic stories with a unique identity.

Good opportunity to build cinematic brand

In addition to film screenings, DANAFF has organized workshops and seminars in recent years on the development of the film industry, as well as fostering connections among producers, directors, and filmmaking organizations.

Every artist, director, and producer who comes to Da Nang can become a “communications ambassador” for the city.

Every film showcased, every professional exchange, and every article published in international media contributes to bringing Da Nang closer to global audiences.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Chairman of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism, said that Da Nang's favourable location allowed it to attract artists from all three regions of Vietnam.

With its well-developed infrastructure, convenient transportation network, and professional event-hosting environment, Da Nang has all the conditions necessary to become a meeting point for domestic and international cinematic activities.

According to Mr. Ky, many cities around the world have embraced cinema as a tool to promote their image and enhance their appeal as destinations. The French city of Cannes and South Korea's Busan are prime examples. For Da Nang, DANAFF is opening up a similar opportunity.

A destination may attract visitors through its scenery, but will retain its appeal through its story. Cinema is the pathway for those stories are told, shared, and preserved in the public memory for years to come.
