DNO - VietHarvest is a pioneering food rescue organization modeled on Australia’s OzHarvest, working with hotels, restaurants and suppliers to collect surplus food and redistribute it safely to communities in need.

With more than 2,250 lodging establishments, including 163 four- and five-star hotels, Da Nang leads Vietnam in high-end hospitality. Yet behind the city’s booming tourism industry lies a growing challenge: food waste from lavish buffets, conferences, and large-scale catering services.

A 2023 study revealed that buffet services are the biggest source of food waste, primarily due to inaccurate demand forecasting. Some resorts generate 100–200 kilograms of food waste daily.

Furama Resort Danang has introduced measures such as portion control, menu adjustment, and cooperation with local farmers to repurpose surplus food as animal feed. It has also partnered with VietHarvest, a food rescue organization founded in Vietnam in 2022.

VietHarvest has successfully engaged major international airlines like Qantas, Virgin Atlantic, and Air New Zealand, and collaborates with over 50 restaurants, hotels, and suppliers in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City to redistribute surplus food to communities in need.

According to VietHarvest CEO Ngo Phuong Anh, the organization plans to work with hotels and restaurants to collect high-quality surplus food, safely stored, packaged, and delivered in compliance with food safety standards.

The process includes quality re-checks, detailed logging, and refrigerated transport to ensure freshness before redistribution to charities.

The initiative will be formally launched at Horecfex 2025, the hotel technology and innovation forum set for late August at the Ariyana Convention Centre in Da Nang.

By reducing organic waste, supporting social welfare, and promoting a circular economy, the partnership aims to enhance Da Nang’s reputation as a sustainable tourism destination.
