Da Nang and Turku chart new directions for stronger cooperation

DNO - A delegation from Da Nang, led by Vice Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee cum Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Council Nguyen Duc Dung on June 17 visited and held talks with the authorities of Turku (Finland), seeking to deepen cooperation between the two cities.

The delegation also included Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Tran Nam Hung, along with representatives of the Vietnamese central city’s authorities

During the meeting, Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Council Nguyen Duc Dung highlighted Da Nang’s growth potential and competitive strengths, while updating the Finnish side on the city’s socio-economic performance in the first half of 2026 and its development priorities for the coming years.

He proposed establishing a regular exchange mechanism between the City Council of Turku and the Da Nang People’s Council, alongside closer cooperation in local governance, smart city development, digital transformation and the modernization of public administration. Citizen satisfaction should remain the ultimate measure of government performance.

Chair of the Turku City Council Kaija Hartiala highlighted the city’s growth and development strategy, as well as its experience in policymaking, methods for assessing citizens’ satisfaction with public services, and approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of municipal policies.

The representative of Turku also presented a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of local governance, strengthening transparency and accountability, and fostering greater public participation in the formulation and implementation of policies.

The two sides discussed the development of a concrete cooperation roadmap for the 2026-2028 period, with an initial focus on education and training, as well as port development in which both localities possess considerable potential and comparative strengths.

Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Tran Nam Hung and representatives of the City of Turku agreed to further promote cooperation in science, technology and innovation, while strengthening links among universities, research institutes, innovation centres and business communities of the two cities.

Both sides will explore the possibility of launching joint programs and technology transfer initiatives in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, microelectronics, the Internet of Things (IoT), biotechnology, biomedical technology and other high-tech industries.

The Turku visit marked another step forward in strengthening the friendly and cooperative ties between Da Nang and Turku, which dates back to 2018. It also provided an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views and chart new directions for cooperation in the years ahead.
