DNO - A British retiree has recently taken to Facebook to share glowing praise for Vietnam’s healthcare system, particularly in Da Nang.

In the first-person account, Baz Mattaz, 63, from London who is currently living in Da Nang, recalled his emergency treatment and recovery.
He shared that during a recent stay in the city, he unexpectedly experienced a health emergency and had to be hospitalized under urgent conditions.
According to his account, he has a history of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition among older men.
While in the UK, he had primarily been treated with lifelong medication, an approach typically adopted within the National Health Service (NHS) for cases without serious complications.
However, his condition gradually worsened, and he was advised to undergo Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) by doctors at the Da Nang Family Hospital.
Before making a decision, he checked with his old UK doctor and a friend who works at a high level in the NHS.
He noted that many recommended proceeding with treatment in Vietnam, as returning to the UK could mean waiting a considerable period for surgery if he was not classified as a priority case.
He also pointed out that private treatment costs in the UK could be significantly higher than in Vietnam.
And, within about five days of hospitalization, he completed all key stages from medical examination and surgery to the initial recovery phase.
The whole thing at Family Hospital came to around VND60 million (US$2,278).
The British patient said he was impressed not only by the treatment outcome but also by the speed and organization of the medical team.
“The care was brilliant: doctors and nurses were skilled, caring, and most spoke English (some fluently). I could not fault the standard or the modern facilities” he wrote.
Mr. Baz Mattaz is not alone. In recent times, a number of foreign visitors have expressed surprise at the quality and affordability of healthcare services in Vietnam.
In early April, Susan Lindgren, a 58-year-old American tourist, also drew attention after sharing her experience of eye care treatment in Da Nang.
She described the cost as “unbelievable” with the final bill of only VND 45,000 (less than US$2).
