DNO - Eleven Vietnamese universities have been listed among Southeast Asia’s leading higher education institutions in the first regional ranking released by Times Higher Education (THE), one of the three most influential global university ranking organisations.
The recently-announced pilot Southeast Asia ranking evaluates 104 universities from eight countries across the region, offering a new benchmark for academic performance in Southeast Asia.
Universities in Singapore and Malaysia dominate the top 10 positions, reflecting their long-established strength in research and international collaboration.
Vietnam recorded a notable presence in the inaugural ranking, with seven universities placed in the top 50 and two institutions entering the top 20.
The highest-ranked Vietnamese institution is the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), which placed 13th overall. UEH achieved a research quality score of 92.1 out of 100, ranking just behind the region’s leading institutions - the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University which lead the Southeast Asian rankings and are widely recognized among the world’s top universities in global rankings.
Da Nang-headquartered Duy Tan University ranked 19th, making it the second Vietnamese institution to enter the regional top 20. The university also received a strong research quality score of 91.9 out of 100, highlighting the growing research capabilities of Vietnamese universities.
The results underscore the steady progress of Vietnam’s higher education sector, particularly in research quality and academic development.
The inclusion of 11 Vietnamese universities in the first Southeast Asia ranking signals the country’s increasing presence in the region’s academic landscape and reflects broader efforts to strengthen research, teaching standards, and international engagement across its universities.
Simon Marginson, a higher education expert at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, said Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a regional bloc has achieved “significant success” in developing its higher education and research landscape. “Notably, Indonesia and Vietnam have made remarkable advances in science,” Marginson noted.
