From fabric scraps to 3-star OCOP products

In 2017, while working at a fashion store in Hoi An, Ms. Tran Thi Kim Soi, a resident of Hoi An Tay Ward, realized that too much excess fabric was being wasted.

Taking advantage of her knowledge of fashion design, she tried making hair ties, headbands, and earrings from scraps of fabric. Surprisingly, the recycled items were quickly favoured by customers, motivating her open up a new direction for green startups.

Ms. Soi then founded the Soi Handmade brand, calling on more women to join in production. Small pieces of fabric are made into hair clips and earrings, while large pieces are turned into scarves, bags, and clothes.

To date, the Soi Handmade brand has developed more than 40 product lines like handbags, clothing, accessories, and household items. In 2024, Soi Handmade's recycled fabric gift products were recognized as 3-star OCOP product by the authorities of former Dien Ban Town.

Firmly pursuing the goal of sustainable fashion, Soi Handmade continues to create more bags, clothes, pillowcases and hats from recycled fabrics. Notable among them is the K'Lang fabric bag combined with Co Tu brocade motifs.

In 2025, the K'Lang fabric bag was certified as a 3-star OCOP product, affirming its economic value associated with cultural identity.

In addition to production, Ms. Soi also organizes weekend workshops for children and tourists to experience recycling excess fabric at her store located on Tan Thanh Beach.

While Soi Handmade started from scraps of fabric, the project "Eco-friendly Net Bag” (EchoBag) developed by Mr. Ngo Tan Thien, Director of EchoGreen Co.,Ltd. based in Huong Tra Ward, gives new life to abandoned fishing nets.

EchoBag follows the circular economic model. Accordingly, discarded fishing nets are collected, cleaned, and then redesigned into shopping bags, waste sorting bags, and fashion bags.

More interestingly, the company implements a "Collect Old - Exchange for New" policy where the damaged bags are taken back and will be recycled into new products. This policy helps spread the message of "reducing plastic waste, protecting the blue ocean".

Currently, the project creates jobs for women, people with disabilities and fishermen through collecting, processing, and producing bags. It has become a “community green economy” model, generating income, reducing pressure on fishery industry, and encouraging ocean protection.

EchoBag products are now available in supermarkets, traditional markets, and eco-tourism destinations, thereby contributing to building an image of a green - friendly - sustainable community.
