DNO - The Trung Vuong Theatre in Da Nang has recently launched “Story of the Han River”, a new art production that transforms the Han River into a narrative thread connecting Da Nang’s cultural memory, urban history and contemporary identity.

More than a conventional stage performance, the 60-minute show reflects the city’s broader ambition to develop original cultural products capable of supporting tourism and the creative economy.
The production arrives as Da Nang accelerates efforts to strengthen cultural industries under Vietnam’s national strategy for cultural development.
Built around the symbolic role of the Han River, the show guides audiences through multiple layers of local life, from riverside communities and fishing traditions to Cham cultural heritage, mountain influences and the energy of a rapidly modernizing coastal city.

Through a mix of music, dance, theatrical scenes and traditional instruments, the production seeks to turn familiar images of Da Nang into an immersive artistic experience.
One of the show standout elements is its focus on human stories behind the city’s transformation.
A theatrical segment recreating the old stilt-house communities along the Han River has drawn particular attention for evoking memories of a period many residents still remember.
Rather than relying solely on visual spectacle, the show places emphasis on emotion, identity and the lived experiences of local people.
The show is being viewed as a pilot model for developing locally branded performance products in Da Nang, an area where the city has long seen potential but lacked signature productions with lasting appeal.

In recent years, Da Nang has built a strong reputation through international festivals, tourism infrastructure and major events, yet experts say the city still needs more cultural performances capable of creating a deeper emotional connection with visitors.
The “Story of the Han River” could eventually evolve into a regular cultural show integrated with tour programmes, hospitality services and nighttime tourism activities.
As travellers increasingly seek authentic local experiences instead of purely sightseeing-based itineraries, cultural storytelling is becoming an important competitive advantage for destinations worldwide.

For residents, the production also serves as an opportunity to reconnect with local heritage through contemporary artistic language.
Organisers hope the program can attract younger audiences by presenting Da Nang’s cultural identity in a format that feels modern, accessible and emotionally engaging.

The timing of the show’s launch is significant. Across Asia, many cities are investing heavily in cultural experiences as part of urban branding strategies.
In that context, “Story of the Han River” represents more than a theatre production, it signals Da Nang’s effort to position culture as a long-term development asset rather than simply a supporting activity for tourism.
