DNO - Since the territorial expansion in 1471, Quang Land (from mountains to plains, coast and islands) has nurtured a vibrant festival culture, most vividly expressed in spring.
Spring in Quang Land is not merely a season but a renewal of collective memory. From after the Lunar New Year to the end of the third lunar month, rituals and celebrations unfold continuously, making a sacred cultural space where past and present meet.
Agricultural festivals
Quang Land is renowned for its agricultural festivals, celebrated by both wet-rice farmers and upland communities, who traditionally honour Heaven, Earth, and the Gods of Farming.
Notable celebrations include the Phong Le Buffalo - Herding Festival, the Ba Chiem Son Festival, the Cam Nam Sticky Corn Festival, and the Cau Bong Festival held in the Tra Que Vegetable Village.
Ethnic groups, including the Xe Dang, Co Tu, and Ca Dong, celebrate the New Rice Festival following the harvest as a ritual of thanksgiving.
Forest communities observe forest worship and 'Opening the Forest' rites, while coastal villages celebrate the Whale Worship Festival with Ba trao singing.
Craft villages, such as Thanh Ha pottery, Kim Bong carpentry, and Phuoc Kieu bronze casting, also hold spring ceremonies, during which they pray for prosperity in the upcoming working year.
Community festivals
Two major spring celebrations attracting large crowds are the Ba Cho Duoc Festival and the Ba Thu Bon Festival. Both festivals are deeply rooted in folk religion and beliefs surrounding the Mother Goddess, incorporating elements of Cham cultural influences.
Many localities also commemorate founding ancestors through communal ceremonies, such as the Go Noi Thanh Minh Festival, the Ngu Xa Tra Kieu Festival, and communal house festivals in Tien Phuoc.
Whether agricultural or craft-based, these festivals preserve village identity and reflect communities’ adaptation to nature, society and diverse cultural influences. Despite historical change, Quang Land’s festivals remain a continuous sacred cultural flow and an enduring spiritual resource throughout life’s journey.
