DNO - The Government of India will provide a non-refundable grant of approximately 120.6 million Indian rupees (US$1.44 million) to support the construction of the My Son World Cultural Heritage Information Centre.
This helped reinforce long-standing cooperation between Vietnam and India in preserving one of Southeast Asia’s most significant archaeological sites.
The announcement was made during a meeting on Tuesday between Vice Chairwoman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi and Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa, who visited the central city to discuss the implementation of the Indian-funded project.
Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Anh Thi expressed appreciation for India’s continued support for the conservation and restoration of the My Son World Cultural Heritage Site, describing it as a clear demonstration of the enduring friendship between the two countries.
The new information centre was added to the ongoing restoration project for Tower Groups E and F following the state visit of Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam to India in May 2026, during which both sides agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in cultural heritage preservation.
According to city officials, the new facility will serve not only as an exhibition space introducing the outstanding universal value of My Son Sanctuary and the heritage of the ancient Cham civilisation, but also as a platform highlighting the centuries-old cultural exchanges between Vietnam and India.
Ambassador Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa said both sides would work closely throughout the implementation process, including finalising the design, identifying investment components, and developing an appropriate management and operational model in compliance with Vietnamese regulations.
The two sides also agreed to extend the implementation period to 18-24 months, instead of the initially proposed 12 months, to ensure construction quality. The project is expected to be completed in time to commemorate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and India (1972 - 2027).
Da Nang has officially endorsed the project and assigned the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to coordinate with relevant agencies to complete procedures for receiving the grant and establishing a project steering committee.
Da Nang leaders also expressed hope that India would continue supporting Da Nang across a broader range of sectors, helping further deepen the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and India.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1999, My Son Sanctuary is one of Vietnam’s most important archaeological and cultural landmarks, featuring a complex of temple towers built by the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries.
India has been a key partner in the preservation of the My Son Sanctuary for many years.
