Hoi An’s enduring appeal

The historic town’s next phase of tourism development will focus on balancing conservation with innovation, using its living heritage, traditional crafts and surrounding natural landscapes to create more meaningful experiences for visitors.

The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently held a seminar entitled “Developing Hoi An Ancient Town - A World Cultural Heritage Site in a New Era” to assess current challenges and discuss strategies for positioning the destination as a high-quality, green, creative, and sustainable tourism hub.

Nearly 200 representatives of international organizations, experts, researchers, and local businesses attended. According to the event organizers, Hoi An’s protected heritage area covers 130 hectares, including a 30-hectare core zone containing 1,175 heritage sites.

Hoi An has gradually diversified its tourism offerings through cultural activities, ecological experiences, traditional craft villages and community-based tourism.

Festivals, traditional performing arts, and green tourism initiatives have also helped strengthen its appeal.

From 2012 to July 2026, Hoi An Ancient Town recorded 19.2 million paid visits, generating more than VND 2 trillion in revenue.

During the same period, Hoi An received more than 85 tourism awards and accolades, repeatedly earning recognition among Asia’s and the world’s most appealing and beloved destinations.

Hoi An pursues sustainable tourism

However, changing visitor expectations, technological advances and growing demand for sustainable travel are placing new demands on destination management.

The challenge is to generate economic value from heritage without compromising its authenticity or outstanding universal value.

Discussions at the seminar focused on digital transformation, improvements to the visitor ticketing system and mechanisms for reinvesting tourism revenue in conservation.

Participants also highlighted the need to manage visitor capacity, redesign tourism spaces and develop new products while advancing green transformation, the circular economy and climate resilience.

Broadening Hoi An’s tourism offerings to surrounding areas is another priority. Connecting its historic architecture and cultural traditions with craft villages, rural communities, rivers, ecological areas, and coastal destinations could ease pressure on the center in tandem with opening up new income opportunities for residents across the wider area.

Planned experiences include “Echoes of Traditional Tuong Theatre”, celebrating Vietnam’s classical theatre; night tours of the former Hoi An Prison; and “Discover Cam Thanh - Stories from the Nipa Palms”, inviting visitors to explore the area’s coconut groves and local stories.

Within Da Nang’s expanded development space, Hoi An is also expected to strengthen links with My Son Sanctuary and destinations in the city’s southern, western, and coastal areas.

A more connected tourism network could encourage longer stays and increase the value generated by each visitor. Ultimately, Hoi An’s future depends on preserving its character as a living heritage destination.

Ensuring residents remain part of the historic town, artisans can pass their skills to younger generations and visitors encounter authentic local culture will be essential to making tourism a lasting source of shared prosperity.
