Ky Anh Tunnels were dug by soldiers, local militia and residents of the heroic Thach Tan village between 1965 and 1967, using rudimentary tools such as hoes, shovels and crowbars, under the dim light of kerosene lamps at night.

The tunnel system was structured as an interconnected network, comprising command and medical pots, and storage areas for food and weapons.

Entrances and emergency exits were cleverly concealed beneath houses, bushes, wells and even Thach Tan village communal house.

With an average height of 0.8 - 1 meter and a width of 0.5 - 0.8 meters, the tunnels require those moving through them to stoop and proceed one careful step at a time.

Today, some parts of the tunnel system have been restored, including a 110-meter-long section, Thach Tan village communal house, an exhibition building, and command and medical pots.

More than a military structure, the underground network served as a strong shield, providing shelter and protection for local officials, soldiers and residents during enemy sweeps and artillery attacks in the past.

In the present day, the Ky Anh Tunnels serve as a significant historical site for educating the younger generation about revolutionary traditions.

To preserve the legacy of their heroic hometown, relevant agencies and local authorities have taken proactive steps toward the preservation and restoration of the site.

One such effort has been the restoration of Thach Tan village communal house, allowing visitors to offer incense in tribute to the pioneers who settled the area and established the village, as well as to remember generations of officials and militia members who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives to defend their homeland and country.

Ky Anh Tunnels were recognized as a national historical relic in 1997. The national-level revolutionary historical site receives around 12,000 - 15,000 domestic and international visitors every year.
