From the lecture halls of the University of Foreign Language Studies, a member school of the University of Da Nang, talented student Phi Hanh Nguyen from the Faculty of Foreign Language Education, has earned a prestigious full scholarship worth nearly £60,000 to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Oxford in the UK, one of the most elite academic institutions in the world. But behind this remarkable achievement is a story of quiet resilience, relentless effort, and an unwavering dream.
Nguyen’s journey is a powerful testament to courage, ambition, and the pursuit of a global dream. To reach Oxford, one of the world’s most prestigious universities, she had to pass an exceptionally competitive selection process, including a rigorous academic application, personal statement, letters of recommendation and an English-language interview. “It took me a great deal of time to complete my personal statement. Instead of listing my achievements, I chose to tell a story about my personal experiences, the challenges I’ve overcome, my motivation to study, and my dream to contribute to society”, said Nguyen.
It was the consistency in her narrative, a clear academic vision and the depth of her hands-on experiences in community projects that helped her stand out among hundreds of international applicants seeking a berth at Oxford.
Choosing to study Education with a focus on Technology, Innovation and Society, the young student from Da Nang carries with her a strong aspiration: to design educational solutions that are learner-centered and practical, especially for underserved communities with limited access to knowledge.
According to Nguyen, what truly enables Vietnamese students to step onto the global stage is not just a polished application or a dazzling list of accomplishments, but rather authenticity, a coherent personal story and a deep desire to learn and create value for others.
“Dare to dream big and believe in yourself. Scholarships are not only for the best, they are for those willing to step out of their comfort zone and keep striving.”, Nguyen shared.
Alongside academic excellence, Nguyen has been a passionate advocate for social impact. She has led and contributed to numerous projects, from scientific research to grassroots volunteer campaigns with a special focus on educational equity for disadvantaged children.
One of her most acclaimed initiatives is the ‘Speech-to-Voice Conversion System for the Mute and Hearing-Impaired’ developed with her peers. The project aims to empower individuals with speech and hearing disabilities to communicate more directly and confidently with those around them, a powerful example of technology driven by empathy.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Long, the Rector of the University of Foreign Language Studies, proudly affirms, “Nguyen is one of our most outstanding students with her tireless discipline, academic rigor and an unshakable spirit. She exemplifies a new generation of students: not only excellent in knowledge and language proficiency, but also courageous, socially responsible, and globally minded.”
He further emphasized that international scholarships not only offer access to world-class education, but also open doors for students to expand their global academic networks, enhance their skills, and adapt to multicultural environments. They serve as a launchpad for building international careers, enabling young people to work with global educational institutions, international enterprises, or return to contribute to their home country's development, particularly in education, research, diplomacy, and language-related fields.
