DIFF 2026: When music meets fireworks...

DNO - At the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF), fireworks may be the headline attraction, but music and live artistic performances are increasingly becoming the emotional force that transforms each competition night into a complete cultural experience.

From stirring orchestral scores and contemporary pop anthems to large-scale stage productions inspired by local heritage, DIFF has evolved into far more than a pyrotechnic contest. It is now a celebration where sound, light and storytelling come together to captivate audiences long before the first firework illuminates the sky.

Music: Emotional heart of every fireworks display

A fireworks display lasts only minutes, but its emotional impact often depends on what audiences hear as much as what they see.

For composer Tran Ai Nghia, a longtime member of DIFF’s Artistic Council and judging panel, music serves as the “soul” of every fireworks performance. Like a film soundtrack guiding viewers through moments of suspense, excitement or reflection, music shapes how spectators experience the spectacle unfolding above them.

This is why musical synchronization remains one of the festival’s most important judging criteria. A well-chosen soundtrack can transform a sequence of explosions into a compelling narrative, allowing teams to communicate stories, emotions and cultural identities without speaking a single word.

That power was evident during DIFF 2025’s “Heritage” competition night, when the French team presented “Heritage - Da Nang Shines”, a cinematic journey that blended elegant melodies with carefully choreographed fireworks. The result felt less like a technical demonstration and more like a visual symphony.

Vietnam’s Z121 Vina Pyrotech achieved a different effect, igniting national pride through the iconic song “Noi Vong Tay Lon”. As familiar lyrics echoed across the festival grounds, thousands of spectators joined in, creating a rare moment where audience and performance became one.

Even international teams have embraced music as a bridge between cultures. During the opening night, the Chinese team surprised local audiences by incorporating the Vietnamese song “Vietnam Tinh Hoa” into its display.

The gesture transformed the performance into something more personal - a musical greeting to the host city delivered through light and sound.

Artistic performances: Building complete festival experience

Yet the festival experience begins well before the countdown to the first launch.

Each competition night opens with a large-scale artistic program designed as an introduction to the evening’s theme. These performances help audiences enter the emotional world that the fireworks will later expand upon.

According to Meritorious Artist Quang Hao, the Director of Da Nang’s Trung Vuong Theatre and artistic director of several DIFF 2025 nights, this year’s productions were built as complete artistic narratives rather than traditional opening acts.

“We wanted culture and local identity to be at the center of the experience,” he explained.

That vision can be seen throughout the festival. Elements of Da Nang heritage - from maritime traditions and whale worship rituals to Hoi An’s ancient charm and Champa cultural influences - are woven into contemporary performances featuring modern choreography, digital visuals and immersive stage design.

Behind the scenes, a creative team of leading choreographers, musicians and performers works to ensure every detail contributes to a larger story. Costumes, visuals, music and dance are carefully aligned to create a seamless transition from stage performance to fireworks display.

For audiences, the effect is transformative. Rather than simply watching fireworks, visitors are invited into a multi-sensory journey that blends culture, entertainment and emotion.

This is what sets DIFF apart from many international fireworks events. It is not just a fireworks festival. It is a platform where cultures meet, where artistic expression and technology come together.

The fireworks still draw the crowds, but it is the music, the performances and the stories behind them that keep audiences emotionally invested.

For a few hours each festival night, the Han River becomes a stage where cultures converse, emotions resonate and art reaches beyond the Da Nang sky.
