DNO - A tropical depression in the East Sea intensified into storm Kajiki on Saturday morning, making it the fifth one to hit the maritime area this year, according to the Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
At 4:00 pm on Saturday, Kajiki’s center was located at about 17.6 degrees North latitude and 114.4 degrees East longitude, about 230km east-northeast of the Hoang Sa Special Zone, with maximum sustained winds at level 10 and gusts up to level 12.
The storm was travelling west-northwest at around 25 kph and is expected to strengthen further over the next two days.
By morning on Monday next week, its center is projected to be over waters off north-central Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City, packing winds at level 11-12 and gusts up to level 15.
Beginning Sunday afternoon, August 24, storm No. 5 will cause winds in the sea area from Thanh Hoa to Hue, including Con Co and Hon Ngu, to increase to levels 6 to 10, with gusts reaching level 15 near the storm center.
Wave heights will range from 4 to 8 meters, and sea conditions will be extremely rough.
From the night of August 24, the mainland area from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri will have winds at levels 10-12, with gusting reaching levels 13-15.
Heavy downpours, with rainfall of 150-300 millimeters, are expected in coastal localities from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri between Sunday and Tuesday next week. Some areas are forecast to receive more than 600 millimeters.
In Da Nang, moderate to heavy rain is expected from August 25 - 26, with some localised heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Whirlwinds, lightning and gusty winds may occur during the storm.
