DNO - To optimize aviation capacity and meet rising demand, Da Nang is repositioning the roles of the Da Nang International Airport and the Chu Lai Airport to create a complementary dual-airport model.
The Da Nang International Airport, currently the third-busiest in Viet Nam, handled nearly 13.5 million passengers in 2024. It spans over 806 hectares, with more than 500 hectares managed by the military.
Under Viet Nam’s master plan, the Da Nang International Airport will serve both civilian and military purposes (classified 4E), aiming to handle 25 million passengers and 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2030, and 30 million passengers and 300,000 tonnes by 2050.
The Chu Lai Airport is the country’s largest airport by area, covering more than 2,097 hectares, of which 1,746 hectares are under military jurisdiction.
It is among the few Vietnamese airports planned as 4F-class, designed for international freight transit and large aircraft maintenance.
Under the 2021 - 2030 master plan, Chu Lai Airport is expected to handle 10 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo annually; by 2050, the airport is projected to reach 30 million passengers and 3 million tons of cargo per year.
Vice Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee Tran Nam Hung emphasized Chu Lai’s role as a key logistics hub that can help regulate international passenger traffic for Da Nang and other regional airports.
Da Nang will focus on high-end international tourism and will upgrade terminals T1 and T2 instead of building a new T3. Future expansion space will be prioritized for Chu Lai.
With this dual-airport approach, Da Nang aims to become a multi-functional air transport hub for tourism, high-value trade, and regional logistics across Central Vietnam and beyond.
