DNO - Medical staff at the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children have successfully saved the life of a premature baby girl weighing only 720 grams at birth, the daughter of a Singaporean couple visiting the city.

The infant came into the world amid a life-threatening medical emergency caused by severe preeclampsia and received intensive care at the hospital from March 16 to June 22.

While on a vacation trip to Da Nang at the 25th week of pregnancy, the Singaporean woman suddenly showed abnormal symptoms and was rushed to the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children on March 16.

After examinations, doctors diagnosed the female tourist with severe pre-eclampsia, a particularly dangerous obstetric complication that poses a direct threat to the lives of both mother and child.

According to Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh, Director of the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children, doctors implemented aggressive medical treatment and closely monitored both mother and baby in an effort to prolong the pregnancy for as long as possible and improve the infant's chances of survival.

However, after two weeks of treatment, the fetus showed signs of severe fetal distress. Facing the life-threatening risk to both mother and child, the obstetrics and pediatrics team held an urgent consultation and decided to terminate the pregnancy, Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh informed.

The baby girl was born via cesarean section at 27 weeks and one day of gestation, weighing only 720 grams. Belonging to the group of extremely premature and underweight babies, she faced a series of harsh survival risks from the very first moments of life.

According to hospital leaders, the neonatal resuscitation team had been on standby in the operating room to receive the newborn.

Immediately after birth, the baby received respiratory support and skin-to-skin contact with the mother.

However, because the mother required continued intensive postoperative treatment and monitoring for severe preeclampsia, she was temporarily separated from her daughter.

At just one hour old, the baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized treatment. This marked the beginning of a long and difficult battle against the complications associated with extreme prematurity and extremely low birth weight.

“The first few days of a baby's life are a truly arduous battle. Due to her underdeveloped organs, the premature baby faces many serious illnesses such as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, hypoglycemia, and neonatal infections” shared Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh.

Beyond treating medical conditions, our healthcare team accompanied the parents through every stage of the child’s development, providing guidance on caregiving skills, nutrition and psychological support so that the family could become the strongest source of support for the baby.

After months of tireless efforts and close monitoring, the miracle finally occurred. From a tiny infant weighing only 720 grams and entirely dependent on advanced life-support systems, the baby gradually overcame life-threatening complications to breathe on her own and feed well.

On the day of discharge, June 22, at a corrected gestational age of 39 weeks, the baby weighed 2,655 grams, with stable health and good reflexes, ready to return home to the loving embrace of her family.

The journey of this extremely premature infant stands as a testament to the effectiveness of multidisciplinary collaboration between obstetrics and pediatrics specialists and the neonatal intensive care capabilities of the hospital, while also underscoring the indispensable role of family support.

No words can fully express our gratitude for the compassion, friendliness and professionalism shown by the hospital's healthcare team throughout this miracle journey.

Sometimes, miracles do not happen in a single moment, but are woven together from daily perseverance, from the love of parents, and the unwavering dedication of the medical team.
