DNO - Da Nang celebrates World Tourism Day 2025 (September 27), showcasing innovative sustainable tourism and eco-friendly initiatives.
The city has long recognized that tourism’s value extends beyond revenue and visitor numbers; it lies in the lasting benefits it can bring to communities and the environment.
September 27 marks World Tourism Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism said “Tourism must be a driver of peace, sustainability and inclusion in a world in transformation”.
Da Nang exemplifies this approach. From early initiatives in the 2000s, most notably making Cu Lao Cham (Cham Islands) off Hoi An plastic bag-free, the city has steadily nurtured green tourism practices that balance modern growth with cultural preservation.
The city’s leadership in sustainability is evident in pioneering programs such as zero-plastic-waste tourism and the establishment of Vietnam’s first provincial Green Tourism Criteria in 2021.
These efforts have drawn international recognition, with Da Nang selected for the “Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development in Vietnam” (ST4SD) project that is implemented with the aim of developing Vietnam's tourism industry in a more sustainable and inclusive manner.
The project is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and is co-implemented by Helvetas Vietnam and the CRED Tourism and Agriculture Solution Consulting Company Limited in the 2024 - 2027 period.
The city is also piloting plastic waste reduction initiatives alongside other provinces. In 2024, it hosted the first UN Tourism International Conference on Rural Tourism, demonstrating its commitment to equitable, community-focused development.
Sustainable tourism is more than a trend. In reality, it is a strategic foundation. By integrating economic growth with environmental stewardship and cultural preservation, Da Nang is shaping a distinctive urban identity while enhancing quality of life for residents.
As Mr. Cao Tri Dung, the Chairman of the Da Nang Tourism Association, notes, “Green tourism will be a pillar of Da Nang’s new tourism model, with lessons and practices we hope to share nationwide”.
For visitors, the city offers more than scenic beaches and heritage sites; it represents a forward-looking vision where tourism enriches people, culture, and planet alike.
