Three pillars of rural tourism, namely ecotourism, community-based tourism and agri-tourism, are being systematically developed, turning traditional villages into sustainable attracttions that preserve local culture while generating new livelihoods.

The Tra Que vegetable village, with a 300-year legacy of organic farming, has become a showcase for how rural heritage can fuel sustainable growth.

Since 2020, it has run a public-private-community partnership model, offering visitors immersive experiences: ‘A Day as a Farmer’ cooking classes, homestays, and locally branded OCOP (One Commune - One Product) products.

In 2024, Tra Que welcomed more than 34,000 visitors, mostly international ones. Tourism created hundreds of non-farm jobs: guides, cooks, homestay staff, drivers, and artisans, while also financing infrastructure upgrades from paved roads to free drinking water systems.

The village was named one of the ‘Best Tourism Villages 2024’ by the UN Tourism Organization, a global recognition that strengthens its brand and market access.

While Tra Que thrives on experiential village tourism rooted in traditional crafts, Hoa Bac has taken a different path: building on community knowledge to develop learning-based tourism with a focus on sustainability.

Its Ecological Agriculture and Community Tourism Cooperative, founded in 2023, blends indigenous knowledge with global partnerships to promote forest restoration, Cơ Tu cultural preservation and organic farming.

With 27 core members and over 200 affiliates, the cooperative organizes study tours for tourists, students, and researchers.

Within two years, Hoa Bac hosted more than 11,000 visitors and generated nearly VND8 billion in revenue.

Programmes range from skill-training workshops to community consultations, ensuring villagers are not just participants but co-creators of sustainable tourism.

Together, Tra Que and Hoa Bac exemplify how empowered communities can transform local wisdom into economic opportunity, turning once-quiet villages into compelling destinations on Vietnam’s tourism map.
