DNO - Vietnam is selected as the host for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s conference in 2026. This affirms the stature, prestige, and active contributions of Vietnam's hydrometeorological sector on the international stage.
The Eleventh Meeting of the SERCOM/SC-DRR Advisory Group on Severe Weather Forecasting (but 2nd in-person meeting) will be held in Ha Noi during 21-24 September 2026. It is expected to bring together 30 of the world's leading scientists and experts to discuss solutions for addressing complex climate-related challenges.
The conference takes place in the context that the El Nino phenomenon has been officially formed and is growing stronger and raising the risk of extreme weather worldwide.
During the four-day meeting, participants will focus on discussing technical directions and global coordination mechanisms to enhance the effectiveness of severe weather forecasting services. A key focus of the sessions will be the review and expansion of the WMO’s Severe Weather Forecasting Programme (SWFP).
According to the hydrometeorological agency, this effort contributes directly to the "Early Warnings for All" (EW4All) global initiative championed by the United Nations and the WMO. The initiative aims to ensure that everyone worldwide will be protected by early warning systems against natural disasters.
According to WMO, the meeting will review updates from RSMCs SWF on their current status of compliance and will also discuss and and agree on the strategy to initiate compliance review of RFSCs/RFSF in addition to considering business continuity management (BCM) approaches within SWFP regional subprogrammes to sustain regional SWF guidance services in various subregions in collaboration with the relevant Members/RSMCs/RFSCs/RFSF as feasible .
