DNO - Vietnam will begin trialing 6G technology in 2028, marking a new milestone in its ambition to move from telecom service provision to full-scale technology development and commercialization.

At the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona, Viettel Group announced it is accelerating research, development and commercialisation of 6G technologies designed and produced in-house.
The Vietnamese telecom giant said it aims not only to deploy 6G services in the future but also to build and market a comprehensive portfolio of 6G products, including network equipment, software platforms and AI-integrated smart device ecosystems.
According to Viettel, 6G will be designed as an AI-native system, embedding AI across devices, network infrastructure and cloud computing platforms.
The architecture is built on three core pillars: next-generation connectivity with ultra-high speeds and extremely low latency; large-scale sensing capabilities to enable real-time data acquisition and intelligent applications; and high-performance computing capacity to process massive volumes of data.
As scheduled, Viettel will participate in 6G architecture research, conduct early system and pre-commercial equipment trials by 2028, contribute to global standardization efforts and prepare for commercial deployment from 2029.
This telecom giant emphasised that “6G commercialisation” extends beyond telecom service provision to encompass the production and export of 6G technologies developed by Vietnamese engineers.
VinaPhone was recognized by Ookla as the “Best 5G Network in Vietnam and Southeast Asia”. The award, presented at MWC 2026, places VinaPhone ahead of major regional operators such as Singtel and Unifi.
At the same exhibition, Viettel joined FPT and VNG in a global strategic alliance initiated by Qualcomm Technologies to accelerate worldwide 6G development and deployment from 2029.
Taken together, the announcements signal Vietnam’s growing technological ambitions: consolidating 5G leadership at home while positioning itself as an active contributor to shaping global 6G standards and supply chains.
