DNO - Vietnam is among the 10 large emerging tourism economies whose tourism development capabilities are improving at a faster pace than the global average.
Vietnam, together with China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Turkey, Mexico, and Brazil, has been named among the 10 major non-high-income travel and tourism economies significantly driving global growth, according to the latest World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI).
These ten economies currently contribute over 28% of the global travel and tourism sector's direct Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
WEF forecasts that their combined share could rise to 35% by 2035, reflecting the increasingly prominent role of emerging markets in driving tourism growth.
This year, Vietnam’s TTDI score stood at 4.15, up 6.1% compared to 2024.
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranked behind Singapore, which placed 13th globally, Indonesia at 23rd, Malaysia at 26th and Thailand at 38th.
However, in terms of improvement, Vietnam’s score rose 6.1%, outpacing Indonesia at 2.2%, Malaysia and Thailand at 5.8% each, and Singapore at 3.3%.
Other strengths included cultural resources, natural resources, sustainability of travel and tourism demand, non-leisure resources, and air transport infrastructure.
Vietnam’s seven-place rise in the rankings, together with its 6.1% increase in score and changes across individual indicators, shows that the country’s efforts to improve the environment and conditions for tourism development are gradually being recognized.
TTDI assesses the factors and policies that provide the foundation for sustainable and resilient development of the travel and tourism sector.
The index does not directly measure tourism performance, such as visitor numbers, spending or revenue. Instead, it focuses on assessing the conditions that enable a destination to attract visitors, serve tourists and sustain tourism activity over the long term.
The index comprises 17 pillars and 102 individual indicators grouped into five broad dimensions: enabling environment; travel and tourism policy and enabling conditions; infrastructure and services; travel and tourism resources; and travel and tourism sustainability.
Indicators are normalized on a scale of one to seven, with the overall score calculated as the arithmetic mean of the 17 pillar scores.
