As reported by the Nhan Dan Newspaper, under the new policy, the airline will not accept overweight or oversized carry-on baggage if it affects the flight’s departure schedule.

Carry-on baggage that exceeds the maximum weight of 10 kg for economy class or 18 kg for business class is charged the equivalent of one piece of checked baggage.

According to information published on the Vietnam Airlines website, checked baggage fees for additional purchases at the airport are clearly listed.

On domestic routes, the price for extra baggage purchased at the airport starts at VND600,000 (US$22.74).

For international routes, the charges are calculated in USD, depending on the flight sector and region.

Carry-on baggage that exceeds the maximum weight limit of 10 kg or the standard number of items incurs a fee equivalent to one checked baggage piece.

If the baggage exceeds standard dimensions, it will be charged as one oversized checked item, while luggage that exceeds both weight and size limits will be charged as one bulky checked baggage item.

The standard dimension for the carry-on baggage is 56 x 36 x 23 cm, and the accessory 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

Significantly, fees for carry-on baggage exceeding the standard allowance will now be collected directly at the boarding gate.

Payments can be made by credit card, debit card or cash, depending on available payment infrastructure at each airport.

In certain cases, excess baggage may be stored either in the cargo hold or within the cabin’s overhead compartment, based on operational needs.

According to aviation regulations, overhead compartments have a limited load capacity. Carry-on baggage that exceeds the standard weight may increase safety risks during takeoff, landing, or turbulence.

Therefore, Vietnam Airlines encourages passengers to bring only carry-on items within the prescribed limits to ensure flight safety and efficient operations.
