DNO - The U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived at the Tien Sa Port in Da Nang on July 30, marking the beginning of its first goodwill visit to the central Vietnamese city.
The visit marks the first time USS George Washington has docked at a Vietnamese port.
The carrier is accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG 62) and the guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86).
The US delegation is headed by Rear Admiral Eric J. Anduze, the Commander of Carrier Strike Group 5, and comprises more than 6,000 officers and sailors.
A formal welcoming ceremony for the visiting naval group was hosted by the Naval Region 3 Command of the Vietnam People's Navy.
Representatives from the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies attended the event.
The U.S. side was represented by officials from the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, the U.S. Defense Attaché Office and the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam.
During the visit, which runs from July 30 to August 4, the US group will pay courtesy calls on leaders of the Da Nang People's Committee and the Naval Region 3 Command.
Also, the US naval officers and sailors will participate in a series of community and cultural activities in Da Nang, including cultural, sports and English-language exchanges.
The U.S. delegation is scheduled to visit and present gifts to a local orphan care center, while naval personnel from both countries will conduct professional exchanges and joint search-and-rescue training at sea.
The visit by the U.S. Navy delegation to Vietnam contributes to maintaining and further strengthening Vietnam-U.S. relations, in line with the two countries' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
The event also demonstrates Vietnam's capability to provide logistical and technical support for visits by foreign naval vessels.
The USS George Washington is just the fourth U.S. Navy carrier to visit Vietnam in more than five decades.
Previous visits included USS Carl Vinson in 2018, USS Theodore Roosevelt in 2020, and USS Ronald Reagan in 2023.
Powered by nuclear energy, the USS George Washington is the sixth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and the fourth US Navy carrier named after George Washington, the first president of the United States.
The carrier measures 333 meters in length, 78 meters in width and 74 meters in height.
Its 18,000-square-meter flight deck can accommodate around 80 aircraft, which are transported between the deck and the hangar using four elevators.
It is currently the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, based in Yokosuka.
