(QNO) - Vo Van Hoai (from Tien Chau, Tien Phuoc, Quang Nam province) transformed his passion for handicrafts into a successful start-up, using local wood to create 3-star OCOP bowls and plates exported to South Korea.
Vo Van Hoai trained in pearl inlay, lacquerware, and woodcraft across Vietnam, co-founding a lacquered wood workshop in Binh Duong with exports to South Korea.
Despite success, he decided to return home to start his own business and contribute to his hometown’s growth.
Hoai currently repurposes old and non-yielding fruit trees from his hometown to create distinctive handcrafted household items, including bowls and plates from acacia and khaya wood, spoons and spatulas from longan wood, chopsticks from lansium wood, and worship items from jackfruit.
Inspired by his childhood, Hoai returned home to craft fine wooden products from local trees once wasted as firewood. After a year in business, his Tan Nhat Son Cooperative employs six workers, with Tien Phuoc kitchenware exported to South Korea.
Aiming for market expansion and e-commerce growth, Hoai brought his wooden bowls and plates into the OCOP (One Commune, One Product) programme.
By late 2024, with government and local support, his acacia and khaya wood bowls and plates achieved OCOP 3-star certification.
Hoai sources local wood, investing in modern machinery to expand production and ensure high-quality products.
His plant-based coatings products include free touch-ups or polishing kits. Hoai encourages local farmers to supply wood, fostering sustainable craftsmanship. His finely crafted bowls and plates are now popular in South Korea.
