DNO - In Da Nang, Vietnam, a heartfelt initiative known as the ‘Second Mother’ model has become a shining example of people-to-people diplomacy, deepening the traditional bond between Vietnam and Laos.
The programme, launched by the Women’s Union of Lien Chieu Ward, connects local women with Laotian students studying at the University of Science and Education under the University of Da Nang.
From simple acts of kindness, the model has grown into a living bridge of friendship. Kind-hearted women in Lien Chieu Ward have taken three Laotian students who now study at the University of Science and Education, namely Hantavong Aphaphone (Chau), Bounsavath Ameena (Bong) and Xayalat Tue (Tu), under their care, offering not just support but genuine maternal affection.
In the minds of these Vietnamese women, caring for Laotian students goes far beyond responsibility. It is an expression of love, as if for their own children.
They invite students home on weekends and holidays, celebrate birthdays, share traditional meals and even teach them how to cook Vietnamese dishes.
One mother even welcomed her Laotian ‘children’ to her daughter’s wedding, giving them the chance to experience Vietnamese wedding customs.
To stay connected, the ‘mothers’ and students maintain a Zalo group called ‘Vietnam-Laos Family’, where they chat, share updates, and exchange cultural knowledge.
“The model reflects not only women’s compassion but also the enduring friendship between Vietnam and Laos,” said Bui Hoa Ly, head of Quang Thanh 4A4 Women’s Association.
“Mother Thieu and Mother Ly are not only our second mothers, but also our teachers who help us improve our Vietnamese language skills. Their care makes us feel at home, even when we are far from our families,” Ameena shared.
According to Huynh Le Hong Linh, the Chairwoman of Lien Chieu Women’s Union, the model has proven deeply meaningful, strengthening bilateral friendship while helping students integrate smoothly into local life. Plans are underway to expand the initiative.
From warm gestures to enduring bonds, the ‘Second mother’ model has become a symbol of humanity and solidarity, writing a new chapter in the timeless Vietnam - Laos friendship.
