Releasing a 10kg sea turtle at the Cham Islands

Translated by VAN GIANG Jun 01, 2025 10:00

(QNO) – The Management Board of Cham Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA) recently released a 10kg sea turtle into the ocean. The turtle had been caught in fishing nets and was handed over by local fishermen.

Local fishermen handed over the sea turtle caught in fishing nets to the authorities.

A 10kg sea turtle was caught in a fishing net by a local fisherman from Bai Hương village (Tan Hiep commune, Hoi An city) on the morning of May 28 while harvesting seafood in the waters off Cham Islands.

After the fisherman proactively contacted authorities and handed over the turtle, the Management Board of Cham Islands MPA examined it and released it back into the wild once its health was confirmed stable.

This responsible act by the local fisherman sends a strong message encouraging the community to join efforts in protecting rare marine species. It also contributes positively to the conservation of sea turtles in particular and biodiversity in the Cham Islands marine area in general.

Recently, the Management Board has regularly coordinated with relevant parties to release various rare animals handed over by locals, including sea turtles, Hawksbill turtles, pangolins, and reticulated pythons.
