(QNO) - Green tourism, a growing global trend, is what Quang Nam has embraced early and firmly. As the province prepares to merge administratively, continuing this green strategy becomes even more important.
One standout example is Tra Que vegetable village in Hoi An. As a model site for the Swiss Tourism for Sustainable Development in Vietnam (ST4SD) project, the village has developed unique tourism services with support from experts and NGOs.
Notable offerings include homestays, farming experience in Tra Que, cooking classes with local producce, and wellness tourism. In 2024, Tra Que was named one of UN Tourism’s best tourism villages, giving the community more motivation to improve.
Tra Que now has 23 homestays, 16 restaurants, and a range of local services, creating jobs and directly benefiting local residents. Its success shows how sustainable agricultural tourism can be expanded across Quang Nam to improve farmers’ livelihoods and build a unique tourism brand for the province.
However, creating a network of truly distinctive green destinations across all 22 sites in Quang Nam remains a challenge, as many offer similar experiences. Experts recommend that each location identify and build upon its own unique, authentic value to stand out.
They also suggest local-level tourism village awards, similar to UN Tourism’s program, and encourage rural destinations to go beyond farming by developing wellness services and using agricultural by-products. This supports environmental protection and circular economies while making tourism more diverse and sustainable.
