DNO - Away from its iconic bridges and famous beaches, Da Nang is opening up a quieter world of ancient village houses, riverside gardens, green fields and traditional communities, offering visitors a closer connection with the rhythms of rural life in Vietnam.

Dragon Bridge, Golden Bridge and My Khe Beach may dominate travel itineraries, but Da Nang has another side waiting to be discovered. In the city's southern areas, village lanes wind past old communal houses, gardens, and rice fields, while rivers, lakes and coastal communities preserve distinctive landscapes and ways of life.

Village life becomes a tourism attraction

Huong Tra, Da Nang offers a glimpse of this appeal through its communal house, Vuon Cua, flower-lined roads and a cluster of nine mature “giang huong an” (Pterocarpus indicus wild) trees.

Nearby Ca Ban features garden houses and agricultural landscapes that could support hands-on experiences, from exploring home gardens to learning about local produce and rural livelihoods. Such places invite travelers to slow down.

Rather than moving quickly between famous landmarks, visitors can spend time walking through village lanes, observing seasonal changes in the fields, tasting local specialties, and discovering stories passed down through generations.

The Tam Ky River corridor could further connect these experiences with neighboring destinations, creating routes that combine countryside scenery, community culture and local cuisine.

For nature lovers, Phu Ninh Lake provides a compelling extension to a rural itinerary. Covering more than 3,400 hectares and dotted with over 30 islands, the lake is surrounded by forested hills and diverse ecosystems.

Its peaceful waters offer potential for eco-tourism, relaxation, wellness activities and outdoor exploration, complementing the slower pace of village tourism.

Coastal communities add another layer to the journey. In Tam Hai, fishing traditions and local food tell stories of a close relationship between residents and the sea.

Visitors can discover the area’s distinctive cuisine, while gaining insight into the livelihoods and cultural identity of a fishing community.

From rural landscapes to cultural discoveries

The appeal of southern Da Nang also lies in the way village life connects with history and heritage. Chien Dan communal house preserves local cultural values, while Ky Anh Tunnels and the Bai Say - Song Dam area offer opportunities to explore wartime history and natural landscapes.

Festivals, traditional crafts, and regional specialties can enrich these experiences, turning a visit into a deeper encounter with the region. Other destinations, including Tam Thanh and Tam Tien, combine coastal scenery with community life.

Further inland, Loc Yen is known for its traditional houses and rural setting, while mountain destinations such as Tak Po and Tra Linh offer a different perspective on the region's landscapes and cultures.

Da Nang's tourism development strategy seeks to link these attractions into a connected network, bringing together beaches, countryside, heritage sites, lakes, and mountainous areas.

Transport corridors, including National Highway 1A, the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway and coastal roads, provide a foundation for multi-stop journeys.

Van Ba Son, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said expanding tourism into the southern area would help diversify products, distribute visitor flows, extend stays, and spread economic benefits to local communities.

For travelers looking beyond the city’s iconic landmarks, rural Da Nang offers a different kind of discovery - an invitation to explore its scenic landscapes, savor local flavors and connect with local communities, one village at a time.
