DNO - Da Nang is developing medical tourism by combining specialized healthcare, wellness, rehabilitation and long-stay services with its strong tourism infrastructure and international connectivity.

From potential to products

Several private healthcare providers in Da Nang have already begun developing services for international patients. These include Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital, Hoan My Da Nang Hospital and Vinh Duc General Hospital.

In September 2025, the Hoan My Da Nang Hospital opened an international clinic under a “hospital-hotel” model.

This provides services across multiple specialties while offering health examinations for foreigners, international medical transportation and cooperation with more than 50 insurance companies. The hospital also provides assistance in English, Chinese and Japanese.

The concept of medical tourism in Da Nang is expanding beyond conventional medical treatment to encompass preventive healthcare, wellness, rehabilitation and longer stays.

This development is closely linked to population ageing and the emergence of the “silver economy”, which encompasses products and services designed to meet the needs of older people.

At the Da Nang Global Business Summit 2026 in April, medical tourism was discussed as part of a broader development strategy.

Over 100 domestic and international healthcare experts and doctors participated in discussions aimed at connecting investment, technology and medical tourism, while exploring opportunities to position Da Nang as a regional “silver economy” hub.

Another potential source of differentiation lies in Da Nang’s expanded western development area, home to Ngoc Linh ginseng, Tra My cinnamon and a variety of indigenous medicinal plants.

These resources could provide a foundation for linking healthcare, wellness, ecology and cultural experiences to create distinctive health tourism products.

Ms Nguyen Thi Hoai An, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the city is gradually developing health and medical tourism products alongside conventional leisure tourism.

These include preventive healthcare, spa and wellness services, traditional therapies and rehabilitation-oriented stays combined with quality accommodation.

At the 2026 Da Nang International Ngoc Linh Ginseng and Medicinal Plants Festival, held in August at APEC Park, Tra Linh and Nam Tra My, the city promoted not only ginseng and medicinal plants but also healthcare products, wellness and rehabilitation tourism, and tours exploring the ginseng-growing region.

Building confidence among international patients

For international visitors, accessibility, treatment time and cost can be decisive factors in choosing where to seek healthcare.
An Australian visitor recently experienced this firsthand at Da Nang-based 199 Hospital.

Diagnosed with a superficial injury to his forearm, he was referred for an X-ray. What impressed him was not only the quality of care but also the speed and affordability of the service.

“In Australia, I usually have to wait four to five hours to have an X-ray and see a doctor. Here, the whole examination took me about 10 minutes,” he said.

He also said his wife had recently undergone dental scaling in Vietnam for about VND315,000, equivalent to approximately AUD17, compared with as much as AUD250 for the same service in Australia.

“Everything was very good, including the process, equipment and quality of service, but the cost was much lower,” he said.

Such experiences can help strengthen the image of Da Nang’s healthcare sector among international residents, workers and visitors.

The High-Quality Clinic at 199 Hospital currently receives an average of 50 - 60 foreign patients a day, with the figure exceeding 100 on peak days.

Most international patients are tourists who require medical care during their stay. To respond to this emerging demand, the hospital is developing cooperation programmes with tourism and healthcare partners in Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

The planned services range from health screening and specialized examinations to aesthetic medicine and high-quality wellness care.
