As part of the NZ Herald Travel Readers’ Choice Awards 2026, the ranking is based on votes from readers of international travel publication The New Zealand Herald (NZ Herald)

The top 10 culinary destinations are Vietnam, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Melbourne (Australia), France, and Auckland, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay (New Zealand).

According to NZ Herald, culinary experiences are playing an increasingly important role in travelers’ decisions when choosing destinations.

Rather than simply seeking out high-end restaurants, many travelers now prefer exploring traditional markets, enjoying street food, participating in cooking classes and interacting with local communities.

Vietnam stands out in this trend with a distinctive culinary identity built around fresh flavors, aromatic herbs, diverse textures and rich broths.

Iconic dishes such as 'pho', 'banh mi', spring rolls, 'banh xeo', various noodle dishes and rice-based specialties can be found throughout traditional markets and local eateries.

Regional diversity also adds depth to Vietnam's culinary landscape. Northern cuisine, represented by Ha Noi, is known for its delicate and refined flavors.

Central cuisine, particularly that of Hue, is noted for its bold, spicy flavors and elaborate dishes rooted in royal culinary traditions.

Meanwhile, southern cuisine tends to be richer and sweeter, with an abundance of fresh herbs.

Vietnam’s No. 1 ranking underscores the country’s growing appeal as a culinary tourism destination, as well as opens up opportunities to develop tourism products closely linked to local culture, people and everyday life.
