Co Co River Festival: Where heritage comes alive
DNO - Co Co River Festival 2026, themed “Co Co - The Flow of Heritage,” took place on August 1 and 2 near An Bang Bridge, Hoi An, Da Nang, inviting visitors to discover one of central Vietnam’s historic waterways through culture, nature and community experiences.
Held in Hoi An, the festival honoured the historical, cultural and ecological significance of the Co Co River while showcasing the area's growing potential for community-based and eco-tourism.
The event also reflected Da Nang’s tourism message of “Touch the Original,” encouraging travelers to reconnect with authentic local traditions and landscapes.
This year's festival introduced four signature highlights. A large-scale opening performance traces the river’s journey from its glorious past to its future aspirations.
Visitors also enjoyed evening boat cruises accompanied by live music, witness traditional fishing-net casting performances on the river, and explore a countryside market featuring local specialties and regional products.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, local leaders described the festival as both a tribute to the river’s rich history and a commitment to preserving its future.
They emphasized that tourism development should be built upon the protection of cultural heritage and the conservation of the natural ecosystem, with the long-term goal of establishing the Co Co River Festival as an annual cultural and tourism landmark.
The festival offers a diverse range of activities for visitors of all ages. Local food stalls present the flavors of Central Vietnam, while exhibition spaces display floodwood artworks, bamboo creations, Thanh Ha pottery and traditional fishing tools that reflect the riverine lifestyle.
Visitors can also browse OCOP-certified products and locally made handicrafts, providing opportunities to support community businesses while experiencing authentic regional culture.
Outdoor activities added another dimension to the celebration. Guests sailed along the river, paddle kayaks through its peaceful waters and enjoy the unique atmosphere created by the blend of heritage, nature and local hospitality.
The Co Co River held a special place in Vietnam's maritime history. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, it served as a vital inland waterway connecting Da Nang with the ancient trading port of Hoi An.
At that time, the river played an important role in facilitating commerce and cultural exchanges between Central Vietnam and international merchants, contributing to Hoi An's emergence as one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant commercial ports.
Today, the festival breathes new life into that legacy by transforming the historic river into a vibrant destination where history, culture and sustainable tourism meet.
More than a celebration, it offers visitors an opportunity to experience the authentic spirit of coastal Da Nang, where local communities proudly preserve their traditions while welcoming the world to share in their heritage.
